Catherine Scholz was the first therapist to be hired when Envision Counseling Clinic was born! She originally started part-time while she still worked for the school district – serving a deep rooted passion for youth suicide prevention. Flash forward to today, Catherine is the clinical director of our Castle Rock office. Catherine had a very positive experience with family therapy early on in her life and that was the spark. The spark didn’t get to ignite until after she sent her youngest to kindergarten and Catherine went back to school to get her Masters in Counseling.
Speaking of family, Catherine and her husband fell in love on the tennis court. What is that called while keeping score – “love all”? Catherine and DeRay will celebrate 30 years of marriage in the next couple years and have two grown children. One of Catherine’s favorite achievements to date is raising two strong believers. Their opera-singing daughter just got married in North Carolina and their son is finishing college. There doesn’t seem to be any youth – her own or others – that have crossed her path that she hasn’t poured encouragement and positivity into! She does have another love though. Her silky terrier Reggie is currently her “favorite child”.
Catherine feels blessed by the clients that God brings her. She describes her role as a therapist as a motivator. She wants to be a safe confidant for them and to wrap all of that in her natural ability to encourage others. She also wants to help people connect with God – she adorably quips that she is in sales for Jesus! Her personal mantra? The last shall become first, and the first shall become last.
But what does Catherine do outside of work? She starts her day with her match (another clever tennis reference), DeRay and coffee. Going for walks, cooking for her family, reading a good book and going to North Carolina to visit her daughter and new son-in-law are other favorite ways to spend her down time. Her guilty pleasures are getting massages and watching crime mysteries. If she were to be anything else – she would love to be a private investigator! Researching and analyzing data to solve a case would be exciting! Catherine chose a book for her favorite quote. One of her favorite books that she read to her kiddos is definitely relevant in her therapist role today:
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen
Can’t go over it, Can’t go under it,
Can’t go around it, Got to go through it!
